Apple is racing toward the development of a conversational version of Siri referred to as LLM Siri, to catch up with ChatGPT by OpenAI. The new LLM Siri will use more advanced AI language models, also known as LLMs.

Apple gave Siri an upgrade as part of the rollout of Apple Intelligence that allowed it to better understand context and follow-up queries, but it doesn't have the brain power or conversational capabilities of ChatGPT.

Apple appears to be ramping up its Siri efforts to secure a spot as a key player in the AI arms race. The company is reportedly working on a more conversational version of its voice assistant Siri that'll be powered by advanced large language models,

Dubbed "LLM Siri" by Apple employees (LLM standing for large language model), the new Siri is already being tested internally on iPhones, iPads, and Macs as a standalone app. But if all goes well, the new assistant will eventually replace the Siri we all know and have a hard time loving.

Whereas Siri in iOS 18 uses first-generation models for some tasks, the 2026 model will have Apple’s self-developed AI models to provide experience similar to ChatGPT directly within Siri.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is working on an "LLM Siri" for iOS 19 that will be more conversational to compete with ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to announce Siri upgrades alongside iOS 19 and macOS 16 next year, but it may not formally launch until spring 2026.
