Clark County Public Health officials are warning residents about a rise in whooping cough cases and chickenpox outbreaks hitting the county, impacting three schools.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KATU) — According to medical officials, 406 Clark County residents were diagnosed with whooping cough in October, which is the highest number of cases among all counties in Washington. Officials say that just in the first two months of the school year they reported that there were 168 whooping cough cases.

Clark County is experiencing an alarming spike in whooping cough and chickenpox cases among children — outbreaks that health officials say could’ve been prevented.

Four students at Portsmouth High School have been diagnosed with pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough.

Cases of whooping cough have emerged at Loveland Elementary, Oak Hills High, and UC. Data shows that the illness is returning to pre-pandemic levels
