Apple is now facing a $1.2 billion lawsuit over its decision to drop plans for scanning photos stored in iCloud for child sexual abuse material (CSAM), according to a report from The New York Times.

It claims that, after Apple showed off its planned child safety tools, the company “failed to implement those designs or take any measures to detect and limit” CSAM on its devices, leading to the victims’ harm as the images continued to circulate.

It's the second suit over Apple's decision not to scan everyone's iCloud photos for CSAM.

The proposed class action comes after Apple scrapped a controversial CSAM-scanning tool last fall that was supposed to significantly reduce CSAM spreading in its products. Apple defended its decision to kill the tool after dozens of digital rights groups raised concerns that the government could seek to use the functionality to illegally surveil Apple users for other reasons.
