For the first time since August 2022, parts of Massachusetts have reached the most urgent drought level — extreme drought — due to the months-long dry weather that has strained New England’s resources and fueled an unprecedented number of wildfires, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

"A single rainstorm can only replenish a small amount of lost moisture in the soil, offering temporary relief from drought conditions," USGS.gov stated on its website. "To truly end a drought, consistent rainfall over an extended period is needed to replenish groundwater levels and fully restore vegetation."

The U.S. Drought Monitor currently classifies just over 66% of the state as being in a severe drought covering most of the Boston area, North shore, Central Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts. Other parts of the state are considered to be in a moderate drought, while the Cape and Islands are currently classified as abnormally dry.
