In a surprising dual strike at China’s grip on the global electric vehicle battery industry, General Motors and Ford have both unveiled manganese-led batteries that could shoulder aside incumbent chemistries dominated by China’s behemoths.
The lithium-manganese-rich cell, developed with LG Chem, uses far less cobalt and nickel than current lithium-ion cells. It’ll be made in the U.S. and show up in 2028.
The Detroit automaker says it will begin commercial production of lithium manganese-rich cells at an Ultium plant in Ohio or Tennessee.
General Motors and its joint venture partner LG Energy Solution have been developing a new battery technology, designed to reduce costs
General Motors Co. in Detroit and LG Energy Solution, based in South Korea, will commercialize lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells for future GM electric trucks and full-size SUVs, in what the companies are calling a new battery technology breakthrough.
