Indiana has struggled on the road of late, dropping three straight, with shooting in particular not traveling well, so it was important to see one go in early. In the last two losses at Minnesota and Michigan, the Hoosiers shot a combined 10-38 from deep (26.3%), well below their season average.

Michigan State scored the first points of the ballgame, but Indiana responded with a 10-1 run to take a 7-point lead. However, the Spartans responded with their own 12-0 spurt over the last four minutes of the opening quarter to claim a 5-point lead heading into the second period.
