In one of the big surprises of the night, Hacks shocked the audience beating favorite The Bear in best writing in a comedy series. Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky took home the award for the episode Bulletproof and co-writer Downs thanked those that have stuck with the show from the start.

Co-star and co-creator Paul W. Downs also addressed the crowd, noting that the team didn’t know if the series would initially sell, given that it featured two female characters, one of whom — stand-up comedy legend Deborah Vance, as played by Jean Smart — was over 60.

Co-creator Paul W. Downs also called for more television that showcases women that are over 60, saying: "About 20% of our population is over 60, and only 3% of those characters [are] on television"

The 2024 Emmys ended with a bang as the HBO series Hacks shocked the TV world, taking home the award for best comedy series. While The Bear was expected to be this years front-runner, Hacks took home the award, its third of the night, also winning for best writing and best actress, which went to Jean Smart.
