Sunrise Community Church says it "intends to keep offering services" to people experiencing homelessness in Austin

Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued the city of Dallas over its recent decision to decriminalize cannabis, joining at least five other Texas cities facing similar court battles. The lawsuit,

Dallas passed the charter amendment known as Proposition R, which decriminalizes possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. It also prevents police from using the odor of marijuana to establish probable cause to search people without a warrant.

Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center has provided care for a variety of needs, including food and health care assistance, since 2015. The lawsuit accuses the nonprofit of being a "common nuisance" to the neighborhood.

A lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is asking the court to shut down a homeless center he says is a public nuisance.

The homeless center responded, claiming churches are protected to do work that is an expression of their religious practice.
