In a game where not much went right for the Oakland Athletics, catcher Jhonny Pereda gave fans a moment to remember, and probably a story he will tell forever. During the Athletics’ 19–2 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers,

Pereda gave up three straight hits against the bottom of the Dodgers’ order. With Los Angeles leading 17-2, Ohtani came up with a chance to pile on. Pereda’s first four pitches to the Japanese superstar were between 62 and 68 mph. Ohtani took a called first strike and later fouled off another pitch.

Shohei Ohtani might be the best baseball player on the planet, but for at least one at bat, he was bested by a backup catcher. The catcher, Venezuelan Jhonny Pereda, managed to strikeout the 3-time MVP in the eighth inning of the Dodgers 19-2 win against the Athletics on Thursday night.
