The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for Northern Ireland and Scotland on Friday as Storm Eowyn threatens to bring gusts of up to 100mph and “flying debris resulting in danger to life”.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: “The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, north-western Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas.

Travel chaos continued on Saturday morning, with flights, trains and ferries cancelled, after winds reaching 100mph caused widespread disruption and widespread damage to rail networks. At least 1,070 flights were axed and 150,000 air passengers affected.

Winds of more than 80mph are sweeping parts of the UK just as the debris from Storm Eowyn settles. Dubbed Storm Herminia by Spanish weather forecasters, the system hasn’t quite met the UK Met Office’s criteria of a named storm.
