Country superstar Carrie Underwood performed “America the Beautiful” at the inauguration of President Donald Trump on Monday. But there was a problem.

Lee Greenwood, who sang “God Bless the U.S.A.” at Monday’s inauguration, defended Underwood amid the backlash.

Underwood’s decision to sing at Trump’s inauguration took many of her fans by surprise. The eight-time Grammy winner and “American Idol” veteran publicly expressed her support for same-sex marriage in 2012, prompting many LGBTQ+ listeners to believe they’d found a rare ally in country music, which is still perceived as conservative.

Underwood received backlash on social media as soon as her performance at the event was announced. One fan wrote on X: “ Carrie Underwood is [performing] at Trump’s inauguration so I’m blocking her on all apps and boycotting all her music.”
