South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday became the first sitting president to be formally arrested. The impeached leader was taken into custody after a weeks-long standoff. He is under investigation on charges of insurrection and will reportedly face a '200-page questionairre'.

The rapid response to Yoon’s attempts to subvert the democratic system showed that some lines had been crossed and that South Korea’s people were unwilling to accept it. This had to do with South Korea’s brutal post-war history and its hard-won path to democracy.
