Google will rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska's Denali on its maps for users in the U.S. following President Trump's controversial executive order.

"As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America," the Interior Department stated in a statement last week. Google responded by noting that the change complies with its longstanding policy of aligning map labeling with updates in official government databases.

One of US President Donald Trump’s first actions upon returning to power was ordering the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed. But mapmakers are still largely waiting for the green light.

The federal government, including the military, is changing the name on maps to "Gulf of America." Even Google suggested it would make the change.

Following President Trump’s order renaming the Gulf of Mexico, at least in the United States, Mexicans and Cubans expressed annoyance, defiance, confusion and even amusement.

It is the firm's "longstanding practice" to observe updates from official sources - in this case requested by Donald Trump.

While Trump's order alters the U.S. government's official position regarding the Gulf of Mexico and Denali's names, it does not specifically direct companies to follow suit. Even so, Google confirmed that its Maps app will be renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Denali in an X post on Monday.
