Coral colonies grown at the state’s Coral Restoration Nursery have been planted at Hanauma Bay to repair coral that was damaged years before, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — There are six pyramid-shaped coral colonies that are now growing on the rocks a few feet below the water’s surface at Hanauma Bay.

A team of divers from the state Division of Aquatic Resources today planted five, nursery-grown corals in the waters at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve as part of a pilot project to restore the reef.

The 4-year-old corals are the same species of coral that are already present in Hanauma Bay. The project is being run by the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR).
