Thousands of University of California health and service workers have hit the picket line as of Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of health care workers protested outside UC Davis Health on Stockton Boulevard Wednesday, calling for higher wages and lower health care costs. Workers described working multiple jobs and struggling to cover expenses.

Tens of thousands of University of California Health System workers are striking across the state, including workers at Sacramento’s UC Davis Medical Center. Hundreds of UC service workers joined the picket lines Wednesday in front of the facility on Stockton Blvd.

According to the AFSCME Local 3299 union, the strike will include roughly 37,000 UC workers “at every UC campus and medical facility across the state.” The strike began at midnight Wednesday and continues until midnight Thursday.

Thousands of patient care and service workers at UCLA, UC Irvine and other University of California campuses across the state are on strike Thursday, alleging unfair bargaining tactics, allegations the UC system denies.

Union members picketed at all UC medical facilities, including Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and at UC Irvine Medical Center.
