Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced Saturday that 18 of the deaths came in his state, and 10 others were hospitalized in critical condition after a severe storm system swept across part of the U.S.

Storm systems sweeping across the Midwest have left several people dead, including nine killed after a tornado sparked a mass casualty event in southeastern Kentucky. Kentucky authorities said there were severe injuries as well as a twister tore across Laurel County late Friday.

There was a lot of straight-line wind action that did damage to homes, uprooted trees and downed power lines during the powerful storm that swept Michigan on Thursday night and Friday morning. But the National Weather Service says there were also several weak tornadoes spinning up along the storm’s leading edge.
