Texas' education board on Tuesday advanced a new Bible-infused curriculum that would be optional for schools to incorporate in kindergarten through fifth grades, one of the latest Republican-led efforts in the U.

Officials in Texas are set to vote Tuesday on a controversial new public school curriculum that incorporates Christian lessons from the Bible as early as kindergarten while putting less focus on other faiths.

At a meeting of the Texas State Board of Education on Monday, educators, parents, and religious advocates offered testimony for and against the proposal, which would allow Bible teachings—such as the Golden Rule and lessons from books like Genesis—to be included in classrooms.

With the Trump administration promising to champion the conservative Christian movement, the lessons may also offer a playbook for the White House.

Critics say the curriculum, which would be optional, unfairly promotes Christian beliefs in public schools in Texas.

The Texas State Board of Education signaled it will approve a controversial set of resources that's received blowback for inclusion of Bible stories.

School districts serving more than two million elementary-school children would be able to adopt a curriculum that draws on the Bible.

Critics say the curriculum overemphasizes Christianity. The board is expected to officially vote on whether to approve the materials later this week.

The State Board of Education will vote Monday on whether the English and Language Arts textbooks provided by Texas will feature stories from the Bible.
