A union representing tens of thousands of workers across the University of California system plans to execute a 48-hour strike next week, following an extended period of contract negotiations and allegations of bad-faith bargaining.

AFSCME Local 3299 members cite unfair labor practices by the University of California. But UC officials say they fundamentally disagree with the union’s characterization of negotiations.

According to the AFSCME Local 3299 union, the strike will include roughly 37,000 UC workers “at every UC campus and medical facility across the state.” The strike began at midnight Wednesday and continues until midnight Thursday.

Thousands of patient care and service workers at UCLA, UC Irvine and other University of California campuses across the state are on strike Thursday, alleging unfair bargaining tactics, allegations the UC system denies.

AFSCME Local 3299, representing UC service and patient-care workers, announced on Tuesday an “unfair labor practice” strike on Nov. 20 and 21.

Union members picketed at all UC medical facilities, including Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and at UC Irvine Medical Center.
