In the original script for "Episode 29," the Black Lodge was a black-and-white mirror of the Great Northern Hotel. This and virtually everything else about the lodge sequence were discarded by director David Lynch for the largely improvised sequence that actually appears in the episode.

The Black Lodge is an extradimensional place that seems to include, primarily, the "Red Room" first seen by Agent Cooper in a dream early in the series. As events in the series unfold, it becomes apparent that the characters from the Red Room, the Black Lodge, and the White Lodge, are connected.

Aug 10, 2011 · Special Agent Dale Cooper learns that by superimposing it on the map of Twin Peaks, it shows the entrance to the Black Lodge. There’s a print of the Owl Cave map available here. A Japanese board game called The Game Of Twin Peaks comes with this map-based game board, which is clearly a combination of two of the “Access Guide” maps above.

I think the binary opposition "white lodge" vs "black lodge" is an in-universe explanation for the spiritual forces of the Twin Peaks universe. The black and white pattern of the Red Room floor suggests that they are more or less two sides of the same coin.

In which I analyze the depictions on the mysterious owl cave "map" to determine its meaning.

Aug 7, 2017 · In the original run of Twin Peaks, we had the Owl Cave petroglyph. That “map” of sorts turned up to be absolutely crucial to the events leading up to Agent Cooper not only finding the Black Lodge, but ending up being stuck there for 25 years.

At 4:34 on the Blu-ray, it looks as if Lucy has traced the borders and headline of the Miss Twin Peaks flyer with a black marker (possibly so the viewer can tell what it is from the reverse side, since we only see that part of the flyer!).
